Casella Waste Systems Reduces Their Carbon Footprint by 43%!

Five years ago, Casella Waste Systems, Inc. decided to demonstrate their leadership in environmental protection by becoming the first company in the industry to measure its carbon footprint. At that time Casella set a goal to reduce their footprint 10% by the year 2012. Today, Casella is pleased to announce that they have met and surpassed that goal. Thanks to great improvements in landfill gas collection and energy efficiency, their 2009 emissions were 43% lower than they were in 2005. Casella Waste Systems remains committed to reducing their carbon footprint, and intend to achieve another 5% reduction by 2012. AGreen has contracted with publicly traded, diversified recycling company Casella Systems, Inc. through New England Organics to supply organic feedstock to the farms. Food processing companies diverting their recycled feedstocks to the AGreen project through Casella meet both Wal-Mart Sustainability Guidelines and Massachusetts goals for management of organics. The management of the nutrients on the farm meet or exceed the standards set by the NRCS of the United States Department of Agriculture.
