The Barstow family settled in Hadley, Massachusetts in 1806, picking a parcel of land that is nestled between the Holyoke Mountain range and the Connecticut River. They farmed and logged their land, planting asparagus, tobacco, and broom corn as well as establishing a small dairy herd. In the early 1900’s the farm’s primary focus became dairy, building their barns with local lumber from the surrounding land. Presently the dairy herd has expanded to 225 milkers and 200 young stock.

The farm is now owned and operated by sixth generation Barstow brothers, Steven and David, and seventh generation Steven Barstow, II. Barstow’s Longview Farm is located on Rt. 47, which has been designated by the National Historic Register as a Historic and Scenic Byway. The land alongside the river is farmed with corn, alfalfa, and hay which provides 180 acres corn silage and 180 acres of haylage feed stock for the herd. The cows are milked twice a day, and the farm is a member of the local AgriMark/Cabot Cooperative.

Proudly, Barstow’s has been working with dairy animals, their business partners, providing a high end milk product that is produced and shipped every other day to AgriMark, and used to produce one of the world’s best cheese products – Cabot Cheddar. The Barstow family opened up a dairy store and bakery to showcase not only a complete line of Cabot products, but to also provide a variety of homemade soups, salads, fresh sandwiches and baked goods.
And don’t be surprised to see their signature steers – in the front yard of the store! The farm raises their own beef which they sell in the store, in a variety of popular packages, but also in bulk to savvy economizing customers. Barstow’s Dairy Store & Bakery uses compostable products and sells compost in bag and in bulk, delivered right to your garden or yard project.
In being a part of the AGreen Energy project, Barstow’s Longview Farm continues its commitment to sustainable practices by converting the manure from their herd into environmentally friendly energy.
